SUMMARY:Join our Open Innovation Call project: Greening the Grid Urban Food Growing Using Solar Energy
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn more about an innovative growing project that uses solar technology to prolong the growing season. \nAs part of the +CityxChange Open Innovation Call\, the “Greening the Grid” group led by Community Power\, Clean Tech Renewable Energy Ltd and the Urban Co-op are testing the ability of solar technology to provide baseline warmth to the soil in small allotments. \nThis experiment is happening in Clare Street Public Park (aka O’Brien Park)\, where the allotments are now in place. Once the solar array is situated and connected\, we will be inviting members of the public to come and see the full range of the project in action. But for anyone interested in seeing the project from the beginning\, we’d be delighted to invite you to O’Brien Park this Saturday 18th September at 12 noon\, when the planting phase of the project will begin. \nIf you would like to learn more about the project\, get involved in the planting\, and hear from our horticultural expert\, we’d love to see you there. We will be planting the seedlings in the specially designed self-watering allotments\, and explaining how the undersoil heating system works. Volunteers would also be welcome to work on the allotments after the 18th\, monitoring the plants and their development. As the experiment develops over the coming weeks\, volunteers will download special food & energy apps to their smart phones\, to facilitate collaborative monitoring of the food & energy project. This short event on the 18th is a way to be part of the project from the beginning. \nPlease email cityxchange@limerick.ie to find out more and register to join us on the 18th.
