SUMMARY:Join our Open Innovation Call project: Greening the Grid Urban Food Growing Using Solar Energy
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn more about an innovative growing project that uses solar technology to prolong the growing season. \nAs part of the +CityxChange Open Innovation Call\, the “Greening the Grid” group led by Community Power\, Clean Tech Renewable Energy Ltd and the Urban Co-op are testing the ability of solar technology to provide baseline warmth to the soil in small allotments. \nThis experiment is happening in Clare Street Public Park (aka O’Brien Park)\, where the allotments are now in place. Once the solar array is situated and connected\, we will be inviting members of the public to come and see the full range of the project in action. But for anyone interested in seeing the project from the beginning\, we’d be delighted to invite you to O’Brien Park this Saturday 18th September at 12 noon\, when the planting phase of the project will begin. \nIf you would like to learn more about the project\, get involved in the planting\, and hear from our horticultural expert\, we’d love to see you there. We will be planting the seedlings in the specially designed self-watering allotments\, and explaining how the undersoil heating system works. Volunteers would also be welcome to work on the allotments after the 18th\, monitoring the plants and their development. As the experiment develops over the coming weeks\, volunteers will download special food & energy apps to their smart phones\, to facilitate collaborative monitoring of the food & energy project. This short event on the 18th is a way to be part of the project from the beginning. \nPlease email cityxchange@limerick.ie to find out more and register to join us on the 18th.

SUMMARY:REGATRACE - Renewable Gas Trade Centre in Europe
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM LINK REGATRACE – 2nd Participants Workshop “ The vision for biomethane in Ireland”\nStart Time: Jul 29\, 2021 09:30am BST London\, 10:30am CET \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86599721908?pwd=cldxMFM3U1A0QXcyNkl4ZXFqTzRxQT09 \nMeeting ID: 865 9972 1908\nPasscode: 769339 \n  \nREGATRACE (Renewable GAs TRAde Centre in Europe) aims to create an efficient trade system based on issuing and trading biomethane/renewable gases Guarantees of Origin (GoO). This will strongly contribute to the uptake of the European common biomethane market. It will be achieved by setting up a European biomethane/renewable gases GoO system\, by setting up national GoO issuing bodies\, by integrating GoO from different renewable gas technologies with electric and hydrogen GoO systems\, through integrated assessment and sustainable feedstock mobilisation strategies and technology synergies\, through support for biomethane market uptake\, and by transferring the results beyond the project’s countries. \nA stable\, reliable and common market for biomethane and other renewable gases in Europe can help achieve EU political targets and decouple its energy systems from fossil fuels: biomethane/renewable gases can be transmitted and stored in existing infrastructures\, making it possible to combine the European natural gas and electricity grids. \n  \n09:30-09:50 Introduction and overview of the emerging industry in Ireland\nPJ McCarthy\, RGFI\n09:50:10:10 The vision across Europe and update from Brussels\nSuzanna Pflüger\, EBA\n\,\n10:10-10:30 Update on EU cross border trade\nMatthias Edel\, ERGAR\n10:30-1040 Urban hubs – Sligo Local Gas Network\nStevie Donnelly \n10:40-10:50 Community approach to renewable power\nJP Prendergast\, Community Power \n10:50- 11:10 Project Clover\nRussell Smith\, KPMG\n11:10-11:30 Regenerative agriculture and AD\nDavid Hagan\, Devenish \n  \n11:30-11:40 Gas Certification update\nBrendan O’ Riordan\, GNI\n11:40 – 12:15 Q&A\napprox\nSummary and Visioning Interaction \n  \n

SUMMARY:Irish Rural Link Webinar – Shaping our Electricity Future. Border Region
DESCRIPTION:Irish Rural Link are hosting a series of consultation workshops on EirGrid’s Shaping Our Electricity Future Strategy. A new report that details innovative approaches to developing the grid to meet ambitious 2030 renewable energy targets. It must redevelop the grid to manage 70% of Ireland’s electricity coming from renewable sources by 2030.\nShaping Our Electricity Future comprises four approaches to achieving this\, as well as meeting the projected increase demand for electricity over the coming years.\n1. Generation-Led: Government policy would influence where renewable energy is generated – favouring locations where the grid is already strong\n2. Developer-Led: In this approach\, we continue to connect new sources of renewable electricity as requested in any location\n3. Technology-Led: This approach uses technical solutions to make the grid more resilient so it can better handle the variable nature of renewable energy\n4. Demand-Led: Government policy determines where large energy users locate in Ireland\nIrish Rural Link will facilitate a public consultation workshop for the Border Region on Friday 7th May 2021\, from 10am to 12pm. The workshop aims to get the thoughts of rural communities and individuals on the four draft approaches in order to reach the 2030 targets.\nThis is the one in a number of regional workshops and Irish Rural Link encourages individuals to attend the workshop designated for their region. If individuals are unavailable to participate in the workshop set for their region\, please register for the region closest to them.”\nPeople can find out more about the public consultation and how to have their say in Shaping Ireland’s Electricity Future by visiting consult.eirgrid.ie\nSpeakers will include;\n• Mark Foley\, CEO Eirgrid\n• Brian O’Gallachoir\, UCC\n• Community Energy Speaker – Bill Kelly Community Power & Siona Daly Tipperary Enery Agency\n• Chaired Seamus Boland\, Irish Rural Link.\nPlease feel free to spread the word about this consultation and our workshop. SUMMARY:Small scale renewable electricity projects - Webinar 3pm July 30th
DESCRIPTION:John Fogarty of Community Power will be speaking at this webinar which takes place on July 30th at 3pm. \nThe agricultural sector accounts for almost 10% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU\, mainly for food production and transport. While there is an enormous potential to produce renewable energy on farms due to the availability of wind\, sun\, biomass and agricultural waste\, important barriers and challenges still remain. \nRecent studies have proven that the main barriers identified by farmers to produce renewable energy are: \n\ncomplex permit and subsidy procedures\nhigh investment costs\nlimited access to credit and doubts about profitability\n\nThe main objective of AgroRES is to develop measures that encourage the production and use of RE in the agricultural and rural sector. AgroRES will support this sector by supporting its energy needs and ambitions in a sustainable\, economic viable and socially responsible way. \nThis webinar aims to outline some of the key steps in development for small-scale renewable electricity projects up to 500kW. All those registered will receive a link by email to join the webinar event. \nContent & Speakers \n\nIntroduction and overview of the AgroRES project – Mel Gavin (IT Sligo)\nPlanning experience 150kW Solar PV – Martin Beirne (Polecat Group Water Scheme)\nGrid connection process\, form NC5 – TBC (ESB Networks)\nSale of electricity – John Fogarty (Community Power)\nQ&A\n\n  \nWebinar link – https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/small-scale-renewable-electricity-projects-tickets-113787718128

SUMMARY:Energy Related Courses Online
DESCRIPTION:  \nA lot of people are using the fact they are housebound due to Covid-19 as an opportunity to upskill and learn new things. As we are involved in energy\, it seems like a good time to post details of some various online courses you can take to increase your knowledge across a range of energy related topics. This is not a definitive list of energy courses by any means and is more focused on short courses you can take online either free of charge or at a small cost. If you are looking for information on degree courses or similar\, this is probably not the place to look. The courses listed are a mixture of on demand courses that you can take whenever suits you to date driven webinars or courses. This is for information purposes only. We plan to update this list as we learn about more courses\, so do bookmark it and re-visit. Of course you could also use this time to switch to Ireland’s first community owned electricity supplier. \n  \nSEAI Online Energy Academy\nThe Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has recently launched their ‘Online Energy Academy’ to help businesses reduce their energy costs. The SEAI Energy Academy can help to lower energy bills by as much as 10%\, potentially even more\, by educating businesses and employees on changing energy use behaviours and effective energy management. With the increasing societal focus on climate change\, and the launch of the Government’s 2019 Climate Action Plan\, many businesses are seeking to play their part in reducing their climate impact. The SEAI Energy Academy is an ideal starting point and allows employees to upskill on energy efficiency and avail of tailored online training that can lead to important business cost savings. \nhttps://www.seai.ie/energyacademy/ \n  \nTipperary Energy Agency\nTEA have been involved with us here at Community Power since the very beginning. They frequently run different training courses on (you guessed it) energy related topics. Sign up to their newsletter to keep informed of new energy courses coming available. Courses are usually face to face\, but with the current travel restrictions\, courses are being conducted online. \nSpecification & Design of Heating Systems with Heat Pumps Online Course \nThis online course aims to enhance the knowledge base of the construction sector in Ireland with respect to heat pumps in homes and commercial buildings. This course is an Engineers Ireland CPD accredited course which you can complete in your own time. click here for more info and to register \n \n\n\nUdemy\nUdemy.com have 1000s of courses across almost every topic imaginable. To find an energy related course just search for your area of interest on the website such as ‘renewable energy’\, ‘solar power’\, ‘electricity’ etc. or just browse through the categories. To build up their membership rates they frequently offer discounted or free courses. So for instance you could get a course with a list price of €199 for sale for €11 or €12. Most of the courses at the following link at time of publication are on sale at discounted rate for limited time. Don’t worry if you miss this sale\, no doubt there’ll be another one very soon. \nhttps://www.udemy.com/topic/solar-energy/ \n \n\nFuture Learn\nFutureLearn.com offer a diverse selection of courses from leading universities and cultural institutions from around the world. Courses are free to take\, but you must complete within a certain timeframe. You can also pay extra to be able to access the course past your ‘finish by date’\, to do tests and get a cert. As Community Power is involved in the CENTS Project\, which is a blockchain enabled cooperative P2P energy trading platform\, this course looks interesting: \nBlockchain in the Energy Sector – Learn how blockchain works\, how the technology has evolved\, and why it will empower energy customers like never before. \n \n  \nAlison\nAlison.com is another site which provides free online courses. It has over 1000 courses listed. Again you’ll need to search for your chosen topic. Doing a search for ‘renewable energy’ under the science category resulted in 30 courses being listed. All 30 are not specifically renewable energy related\, but it’s somewhere to start. \nhttps://alison.com/courses?&category=science&query=renewable+energy \n \n\n  \nCourses with Specific Dates:\nCourses listed below must be attended on or completed by specific dates. We will endeavour to update these regularly. \n  \nSEAI Online Energy Academy\nSEAI’s Sustainable Energy Communities are organising a series of online training sessions for communities. Topics includes energy efficiency\, smart energy\, renewable energy\, renewable heat\, sustainable transport\, integrated planning\, community engagement\, strategic financing\, home energy saving tips and media training. Full details here: https://www.seai.ie/events/ \n  \nTipperary Energy Agency\nGenerator Grid Connection Process in Ireland \nUPDATE: THIS DATE HAS PASSED – KEEP AN EYE ON TEA WEBSITE/NEWSLETTER FOR NEW DATES \nThis course is aimed at developers\, consultants\, legal advisors\, financial investors\, equipment suppliers and contractors for new renewable generation projects in Ireland. Full details here: https://tippenergy.ie/event/online-training-course-generator-grid-connection-process-in-ireland/ \nTEA are also planning more courses and are seeking input from the public on which courses to run. You can offer your suggestions here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XHMJK9S \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Energy Democracy and Community Power
DESCRIPTION:How can we build energy democracy in our communities so that everyone has access to community power? Join us on Tuesday March 24th for an online webinar. \nRegister to attend this event!   \nIn Ireland our electricity principally comes from fossil fuel sources and is among the most expensive in Europe. Moneypoint is overdue to be closed\, and it’s burning coal from a Colombian mine with a dire human rights record. As our peat burning power stations are being phased out\, important questions are being raised about a just transition for workers in the ESB and Bord na Móna.\n\n\nAnd as we move (too slowly) towards increased renewable energy production\, questions are also being raised about the sustainability of biomass that the ESB is importing for its power plants. Our energy consumption on a household level is also high\, with reliance on oil for home heating and poorly insulated homes\, while at the same time many in Ireland struggle with energy poverty and inability to pay their energy bills.\n\nThis pattern repeats itself on a global scale\, with industrialised nations using far more than our fair share of the fossil fuels causing climate change\, while impoverished countries export most of their natural resources and don’t have enough energy for their own citizens’ needs. Within these countries\, fossil fuel extraction also impacts the most on impoverished and indigenous communities\, and communities of colour. We have a responsibility to reduce our reliance on  fossil fuels and help reduce the worst impacts of climate chaos.\nI’m in! I’ll register my place\nOrganisations across the world are calling for and acting on changes to our energy model. There are many names and facets to the changes – just transition\, community power\, energy democracy\, community energy – but what they share in common is the idea of an energy model by the people for the people\, where we can all participate in deciding how our energy is produced on a local level\, and share in the ownership and benefits. \n\nCommunity-owned energy projects have the potential to transform our energy system. Communities and cooperatives all over Europe are creating projects where they own and are actively involved in running an energy resource. Join us at this event to hear information from those who are doing this on-the-ground work in Ireland\, as well as analysis of the problems with Ireland’s current energy model.\n\nTipperary Energy Agency\, a co-organiser of this event\, has been successfully supporting Tipperary to reduce its energy demand for over 20 years. The agency has a proven ability in enabling people\, communities and the public sector to become more sustainable in their energy use. Paul Kenny\, the CEO\, will share his experiences of his work on sustainable energy technologies\, in founding the SuperHomes deep retrofit programme and as a key supporter of the Community Power and Sustainable Tipp initiatives.\n\nWe will also be joined by John Fogarty of Community Power\, Ireland’s first community owned electricity supplier\, which is a partnership of community energy groups working for a sustainable energy future for Ireland that grew out of Ireland’s first community owned wind farm\, Templederry Wind Farm in Co Tipperary\, and who now are working with Irish communities to develop more renewable energy projects owned by people.\n\n\n\nCliona Sharkey\, Policy Advisor with Trocaire\, will also be joining us to speak about energy democracy in the transition at the global level\, the risks and opportunities\, the people and communities on the frontlines of climate change and resource extraction\, and how their struggles connect with our own. The event will be chaired by Kate Ruddock\, Deputy Director of Friends of the Earth Ireland.\n\nI hope you’ll join us.
