Speakers included Cliona Sharkey, Policy Advisor with Trócaire, Paul Kenny, CEO of Tipperary Energy Agency and John Fogarty of Community Power, Ireland’s first community owned electricity supplier. Kate Ruddock of Friends of The Earth Ireland was the moderator.

Cliona Sharkey spoke about energy policy and Sustainable Development Goal 7 Affordable and Clean Energy: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. Cliona also spoke about the increasing challenges human rights defenders are subjected to while trying to protect the environment and how all energy policy and investment decisions need to be challenged. There is no room for new and continued investment in fossil fuels.

Paul Kenny, CEO of Tipperary Energy Agency, spoke about what the energy transition looks like in Ireland, energy usage, importance of home retrofitting in Ireland and steps we can all take to move away from fossil fuels.

John Fogarty of Community Power spoke about how Templederry community owned wind farm was established and how Ireland’s first and only community owned electricity supplier, Community Power, came to be established.
